The head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, is the favorite to succeed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in the 2024 elections, according to a survey published this Wednesday by the newspaper Reforma .
According to the survey, Sheinbaum, from the official National Regeneration Movement party (Morena), has the support of 26% of those surveyed, followed by the chancellor, Marcelo Ebrard, who reaps 23%.
Both Sheinbaum and Ebrard are fighting to be Morena’s candidates in 2024, when López Obrador’s term will end, although both were affected by the accident on line 12 of the capital’s metro that left 26 dead last May.
The survey places in third place, with a support of 17%, Margarita Zavala, from the National Action Party (PAN) and wife of former president Felipe Calderón (2006-2012).
Zavala already ran as an independent candidate in 2018 against López Obrador but withdrew early from the race due to the meager results predicted by the polls.
In fourth place, with 15%, would be Ricardo Anaya, a former PAN presidential candidate, who left the country due to the prosecution’s investigation against him in the Odebrecht case.
The poll also includes Senator Ricardo Monreal (Morena, 9%), the Governor of the State of Mexico, Alfredo del Mazo (PRI, 8%), the Governor of Yucatán (PAN, 6%), the Governor of Jalisco (Movimiento Citizen, 6%) and the former Secretary of Tourism Enrique de la Madrid (PRI, 5%).
President López Obrador presented this Wednesday the report for his third year in office, which marks the middle of his term.
The survey was conducted in person in homes from August 24 to 29 with 1,000 adults. It has a margin of error of 4.9% and a confidence level of 95%.
