Mexico welcomes more fleeing Afghan journalists and their families.
MEXICO CITY, Aug 29 (Reuters) – Mexico received 86 media workers and their family members from Afghanistan on Sunday, the government said, as more people flee the country after the Taliban militant group’s takeover earlier this month.
More media workers from Afghanistan are arriving in Mexico to apply for humanitarian status at the Benito Juarez International airport in Mexico City, Mexico, on August 29, 2021.
Mexico’s Foreign Relations authorities have expressed their disposition to provide asylum to as many Afghans as possible.
Mexican officials, unlike their counterparts in the United States, managed to overcome the bureaucracy of their immigration system to quickly provide the documents that, in turn, allowed Afghans to fly from the besieged Kabul airport to Doha, Qatar. The documents promised that Afghans would receive temporary humanitarian protection in Mexico while they explored future options in the United States or other countries.
