The former presidential candidate and former leader of the National Action Party (PAN), Ricardo Anaya, announced this Saturday that he will leave Mexico for “a brief season” because President Andrés Manuel López Obrador supposedly “wants to put him in the jail with lies and two questionable witnesses ”.

In a video posted on his social networks, Anaya said that the president seeks to avoid his candidacy in 2024 and that his government is “very bothered” by his criticism.

“López Obrador wants to screw me up the hard way. I get in the way of his succession plans in 2024. He doesn’t want me to be a candidate. And he wants to imprison me because he does not like what I say, ”Anaya said in his video.

President López Obrador had not spoken on Saturday in the face of Anaya’s complaints and CNN also communicated with the Presidency to which they responded that there will be no positioning. “He is free to comment,” they added.

Anaya indicated that they will initiate a process against him as a result of the statements of the former director of Pemex, Emilio Lozoya, before the Prosecutor’s Office. In August 2020, media such as El Universal de México and Reuters reported that Lozoya declared that he gave Anaya almost 7 million pesos – US $ 343,775 – to support his aspirations to reach the governorship of Querétaro. This is something that Anaya denies and claims that she will prove her innocence.

“What is happening is that if you are uncomfortable for a president who is obsessed with having all the power, who cannot bear to be criticized, who has told us that ‘either you are with him or you are against him’, the way out is that: get you out of the way, scrub you the bad way, “he said.

Until this Saturday, the Attorney General’s Office had not publicly confirmed an investigation against Anaya and a request for information sent by CNN was not immediately answered.

Authorities are investigating alleged money laundering and bribery in the Odebrecht case. Lozoya collaborates in that case as a witness and has denied all the charges.

Regarding his departure from the country, he said that although it is not what he would have liked, he does it to avoid having his political rights and the possibility of being a candidate in 3 years “take away.” He indicated that he will make a tour with migrants, “with those Mexicans who also had to leave Mexico to preserve hope.”
