Mexico .- Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, better known in the world of drug trafficking as the “Chief of Chiefs” gave an interview to Telemundo from the federal prison in Puente Grande, Jalisco.

In the interview, the “Chief of Chiefs” showed himself as a 75-year-old man with serious health problems, he has pneumonia, he is blind in one eye, deaf in one ear, in a wheelchair and has a broken arm, in addition to the fact that it depends on oxygen.

Félix Gallardo was known as the “cocaine czar”. After 32 years in prison for the murder of Enrique Camarena, he agreed to the interview, due to his state of health, the interview questions had to be written in order for him to answer.

The “Boss of Bosses” declared that he no longer has hope of life due to his state of health, he still has eight years to complete the 40-year sentence.

In the 70s and 80s, he was the most powerful drug lord in Mexico, he had ties with the Medellín cartel of Pablo Escobar, as well as with Ramón Mata Ballesteros from Honduras.

He is the uncle of Sandra Ávila Beltrán, “The Queen of the Pacific” and is linked as a relative of the Arellano Félix brothers of the Tijuana Cartel, however, Miguel Ángel does not recognize the relationship.

Félix Gallardo was arrested in April 1989 in a luxurious house in Cosmos (Guadalajara). The persecution and capture of its main founding partners of the all-powerful Guadalajara cartel, Rafael Caro Quintero – freed in 2013 and the most wanted man in the DEA – and Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo, alias Don Neto, after the DEA’s fury over the kidnapping, torture, and murder of Kiki Camarena cornered their leader and blew up the old criminal chessboard.

“This concluded the unique cartel model with which the drug trafficking industry began in the country,” wrote journalist Diego Enrique Osorno in a report in this newspaper.

Despite the fact that Osorno himself said he had interviewed Félix Gallardo for his book El cartel de Sinaloa. A history of the political use of the narco (2009) in which he explained the relationship between politicians and drug lords of the time – “The narcos were not against the Government, we were part of the Government” -, in the interview with Telemundo, the narco rejects any connection with the drug business. And his testimony seems to cling to that of an old, tired and sick man, who does not understand why he has spent 32 years in prison.
