The birth of the gray wolf pups “is the result of the promotion and improvement of the shelters dedicated to this species.

Two gray wolf cubs that were born at the “El Ocotal” Species Conservation Center, celebrated two months of life after they were born on May 13 in this region of the State of Mexico.

Authorities of the Ministry of the Environment (SMA) and the State Commission of Natural Parks and Fauna (Cepanaf) reported that they maintain constant conservation work for Mexican species with the creation of management strategies and in the reproduction of the species.

The birth of the gray wolf cubs “is the result of the promotion and improvement of the shelters dedicated to this species, in the Center for the Conservation of Species of ‘El Ocotal’ of the Government of the State of Mexico,” they indicated.

In these shelters they installed camera traps, documenting and monitoring for the first time the mating process of the parents and after approximately 63 to 65 days of gestation, it was possible to observe the cubs in their burrow, which they remained in their first months of pregnancy. life.

“These two Mexican gray wolf puppies have become a priority for animal welfare promoters, in order for them to reach their sexual maturity and, as the case may be, be able to join as release candidates , reproductive partners or for genetic improvement for the next reproductions and thus increase the hope of recovering the species in the wild in its historical area of ​​distribution, which ranged from the southern United States to the state of Oaxaca, “said authorities from the Mexican Ministry of the Environment.

Since 1999, CEPANAF has been part of the United States-Mexico Binational Program for the Recovery of the Mexican Gray Wolf and through the establishment of comprehensive conservation programs for this species, it has been possible to obtain, until 2021, five litters that contribute to the existence Of the same.

Napoleón Fillat Ordóñez, Director General of Cepanaf , highlighted that “the reproduction of the species represents a great advance to direct the strategies, activities and specific actions that help to its conservation, protection and recovery”.
