The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, proposed to replace the Organization of American States (OAS) with a new international organization that integrates all the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. “The proposal is, neither more nor less, than to build something similar to the European Union, but attached to our history, our reality, and our identities.”
“In that spirit, the replacement of the OAS by a truly autonomous body, not a lackey of anyone, but a mediator at the request and acceptance of the parties in conflict in matters of human rights and democracy should not be ruled out,” the president said in a speech he gave this Saturday at the Castle of Chapultepec, on the occasion of the 238th anniversary of the birth of Simón Bolívar.
He also criticized the United States government in the Latin American region. “The policy of the last two centuries characterized by invasions, to put or remove rulers at the whim of the superpower, is already unacceptable. Let’s say goodbye to the imposition of differences, sanctions, explosions, and blockades ”.
These statements were made in the context of the celebration of the Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Mexico City, where 25 ministers from the entire region attend.
President López Obrador’s proposal is to replace the OAS, led by the Uruguayan Luis Almagro and based in Washington, United States, by an international organization that is more committed to a common regional agenda, aimed at resolving conflicts between countries. Latin Americans.
“It is time for a new coexistence among all the countries of America because the model imposed more than two centuries ago is exhausted, it has no future, no way out, it no longer benefits anyone,” criticized López Obrador, who also took time to talk about Cuba.
“We may or may not agree with the Cuban Revolution and its government, but having resisted 62 years without submission is quite a feat. I believe that, for their struggle to defend the sovereignty of their country, the people of Cuba deserve the prize of dignity ”, he emphasized.
And he added: “that island should be considered as the new Numancia because of its example of resistance and I think that for that very reason it should be declared a World Heritage Site.”
With the presence of the 33 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, Mexico is hosting this weekend the XXI Meeting of Foreign Ministers of CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States), led by the Secretary of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard.
The Celac meeting, of which Mexico as president pro tempore, aims to find mechanisms for the acquisition of vaccines against Covid-19 for the region.
But López Obrador took the opportunity to suggest the replacement of the OAS, whose secretary-general, the Uruguayan Luis Almagro, has harshly criticized for his management which he considers “one of the worst” in the history of the organization.
The Mexican president’s approach comes amid Cuba’s rejection of the sanctions announced Thursday by the United States, among others, against senior Cuban officials for the “repression” of recent popular demonstrations on the island.
After the protests of July 11 and 12, López Obrador spoke out against any form of “interventionism” in the Cuban crisis, and offered to send humanitarian aid to the country.
Mexico will send two ships with medical supplies, food, and gasoline to Cuba this Sunday .
