July 12, 2021.- In the current administration headed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, 43 journalists and 68 human rights defenders have been assassinated, the Interior Ministry acknowledged on Monday, July 12th.

Of the people killed, 7 journalists and 2 defenders were beneficiaries of the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists.

Through a statement, Segob reported that, as the operating institution of the mechanism, it has been recognized that an element that makes the human rights crisis visible is the level of risk suffered by journalists and human rights defenders when carrying out their work as length and breadth of the country.

The figures released were generated by the mechanism itself, from December 2018 to date.

He indicated that since the beginning of this administration, the Government of Mexico has strengthened the mechanism to generate more coverage and attention to this problem, since, from December 2018 to date, it has increased the number of beneficiaries by more than 80 percent.

“In this sense, it is that in the years 2019 and 2020 783 million pesos were allocated, while this year a budget of 227.6 million pesos was approved and an expansion of 189 million pesos was requested, which would give a total budget for 2021, 416.6 million pesos ”, he specified.
