A fire was registered in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico 400 meters from the Ku-Charly oil platform that belongs to the Ku Maloob Zaap Integral Production Assets of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), located in the seas of the state of Campeche.
So far, the fire remains out of control, the start of the incident was reported from 4 in the morning on Friday, July 2.
The fire started because a valve in the submarine line burst, which caused the hydrocarbon to flow from the bottom of the sea, and when it merged with oxygen, the fire was generated on the surface.
According to the authorities, the incident is fought by three vessels to avoid a direct risk with the platform.
It was also reported that divers experts in accident control will go down to repair and close the valves located at a depth of 78 meters.
Meanwhile, no injuries have been reported; however, Pemex has not offered any position on the matter regarding the fact.
At 4 in the afternoon, almost 12 hours after the accident, Petróleos Mexicanos reported through a press release that it managed to control the gas and fire emanation in the submarine pipeline near the KU-C satellite platform in the Campeche Sound, attached to the Northeast Marine Region Production Subdirectorate.
“The incident was dealt with immediately when the security protocols were activated and with the accompaniment of nearby firefighting vessels such as Santa Cruz Island, Campeche Bay, and Bourbon Alienor.
In addition, the interconnection valves in the pipeline were closed, extinguishing the fire and the gas emanation, concluding the contingency around 10:45 hours, and restoring normal operating conditions,” said the Mexican PEMEX.
