10 variants of the Covid-19 virus circulate in Oaxaca, including the British one, which is more contagious

Juchitán de Zaragoza, Oaxaca– The British variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus classified as B.1.1.7 is already circulating in the municipalities of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region, and although it is not more deadly, it is more contagious, reported the Oaxaca Health Services (SSO). 

In a press release, the health agency indicated that 10 variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, responsible for the respiratory disease Covid-19, have been identified in Oaxacan territory, of which B.1.1.519 is the common both in Mexico and in the entity since 45% of patients who have undergone samples presented it.  

The agency detailed that the variants that circulate in Oaxaca are B.1.1.519; B.1; B.1.2; B.1.1.432; B.1.301; B.1.1.222; B.1.427; B.1.429; P.1 and B.1.1.7, all subject to epidemic surveillance.

According to the SSO, the number of virus variants increased in state territory because Oaxaca is “a highly touristy state with a constant flow of migrants who come to the localities mainly from abroad.” These variants have been located mainly in districts such as Oaxaca de Juárez, Santa Lucía del Camino, Juchitán de Zaragoza and San Pedro Mixtepec. 

However, the health agency assured that thanks to vaccination in the state, the incidence of cases decreased by 85% and currently the percentage of. hospitalization dropped considerably, reporting less than 20% in the last week. 

Currently Oaxaca is located in the 17th place in the national table for the number of cases and 21st in the position for deaths due to the pandemic. 

Before them, the SSO urged the population not to relax the measures against Covid-19, continue with the Healthy Distance Day, avoid massive events of any kind, and continue with frequent hand washing, because although Oaxaca is in Green Epidemiological Risk Traffic light, the pandemic is not over.
