PAN remains as the leading political force in Aguascalientes; Morena comes in second

The National Action Party (PAN) maintained political power in Aguascalientes, winning most of the local councils, almost half of the municipalities, and the three federal districts.

AGUASCALIENTES, Ags. (June 8, 2021). – With 100% of the records computed and 96% accounted for, the National Action Party (PAN) maintained political power in Aguascalientes, winning the majority of the local councils, almost half of the municipalities, and the three federal districts. Morena maintained itself as the second political force and the PRI as the third.

Of the eleven municipalities, the PAN retained the capital – which is home to 70% of the population in the entire state – and the municipalities of Calvillo (one of the most important in receiving remittances), Jesús María and Tepezalá. While Morena kept the municipality of Asientos – bordering Zacatecas – and won Rincón de Romos and El Llano. The PRI was left with San Francisco de los Romo and Pabellón de Arteaga, the Green Party was the winner in Cosío; and the recently created Fuerza Por México won in San José de Gracia with Armando Rodríguez, husband of the current PAN mayor in that municipality.

Leonardo Montañez Castro

In the state capital, the most contested election because it sets the stage for the election to governor in 2022, the PAN-PRD alliance – with Leonardo Montañez Castro as a candidate – won with a wide advantage that exceeds 90 thousand votes.

Morena announced that they will respect the election results despite the fact that from the beginning of the electoral day he warned of fraud. This is the second time in a row that Morena’s candidate, Arturo Ávila Anaya, has lost the municipal election.
