MEXICO CITY. – The first case of mucormycosis, an infection commonly called “black fungus” was detected in a 34-year-old male patient in the State of Mexico, who is in recovery after being infected with Covid-19.

It is a disease that, in severe cases, can necrotize the tissue and can affect patients with a suppressed immune system, that is, they have very low defenses.

“Mucormycosis is an infection caused by various fungal microorganisms of the Mucorales order, which includes the Rhizopus, Rhizomucor, and Mucor genera,” highlights the MSD Manual.

Black fungus is caused by mold found in soil, plants, manure, and decaying fruits and vegetables, mainly in humid environments.

It can affect the sinuses or lungs after a person inhales airborne fungal spores, and on the skin, it can cause a superficial injury such as a rash or burn.

Mucormycosis was linked in India as a serious sequel to patients who have suffered from coronavirus. The disease could cause the amputation of a limb or even blindness.

The symptoms are:

  • Headache
  • Black spots in the mouth or nasal bridge
  • Skin rashes in a black tone
  • Swelling in the cheeks

The Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell Ramírez, pointed out that this disease does not spread like infections caused by Covid-19.”
