The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is the new headquarters of the Galileo Project Information Center for radio navigation and satellite positioning of the European Union (EU) in Central America and the Caribbean, the educational center reported on Wednesday.

“This Galileo Information Center for Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, promoted and co-financed by the European Commission (General Directorate of Defense Industry and Space), will be managed by a consortium of relevant universities and industrial partners”, indicated the UNAM in a release.

These are UNAM itself together with the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and the companies Telespazio Ibérica, Everis, Enaire, Telespazio SpA, and Geotechnologies.

“The services it offers are free and provide numerous benefits; for example, the authentication of navigation messages to guarantee the source of the message and avoid intrusions,” the bulletin said.

The Galileo satellite system came into operation in 2016, so currently, many navigation devices for ships, cars, smartphones, trains, airplanes, and even robotic equipment are equipped with receiving chips for the Galileo signal.

María Mota Rodrigo, from Telespazio Ibérica and coordinator of the GIC for Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, specified that “the also known as European GPS is the first of its kind to be handled by civilians and currently has a fleet of 26 satellites in orbit offering its services worldwide, mainly in Europe as of 2016. “
