The mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Scheinbaum, confirmed that the avenue that runs from the Hidalgo Metro to Avenida Insurgentes, known as Puente de Alvarado, will be called México-Tenochtitlan.

CITY OF MEXICO (May 23, 2021) .– The head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Scheinbaum, confirmed on social networks that the avenue that goes from Metro Hidalgo to Avenida Insurgentes, known as Puente de Alvarado, will officially change its name to Mexico-Tenochtitlan.

Its publication, released on May 21, was accompanied by a 51-second interactive clip from the Secretariat of Culture of Mexico City stating that: “On May 20, 1520, the Spanish, under the command of Pedro de Alvarado , carry out the ‘Matanza de Tóxcatl’ in the Templo Mayor ”, and the story is told:

“Ceremony of Tóxcatl was the celebration dedicated to Tezcatlipoca and Huitzilopochtli, the ceremony of request for rains. Several rites were performed, which included the sacrifice of quails and culminated with the sacrifice of Tezcatlipoca in a small temple called Casa de Los Dardos (House of Darts). They made a figure of Huitzilopochtli in amaranth and honey, which was carried on shoulders in a procession, accompanied by dances and songs.

“When the ceremony began, the crowd was gathered in the courtyard of the temple to dance and sing, but the Spaniards blocked the exits and attacked unarmed men, women, and children who were celebrating in the Toithualco or sacred courtyard of the Great Tenochtitlan.

The Spanish killed with their spears and steel swords hundreds of people, nobles and commoners, without distinction. Others were trampled to death in their attempt to escape. It is estimated that this massacre could have occurred at the end of May of the year 1520.
