In San Pedro Totolapan, in the Southern Sierra of Oaxaca, elements of the Mexican Army and Civil Protection continue with the cleaning and removal of debris after the landslides caused by the recent rains.

“In San Pedro Totolapan we have a partial impact on 15 homes and a total of five homes that are in the riverbed of this ravine. We as the State Coordination of Civil Protection have to make the request for a declaration of emergency and disaster, we will see the response that they give us at the national level, ”reported Siddharta Luna Hernández, in charge of Oaxaca Civil Protection.

Despite the damage to homes, no family was transferred to temporary shelters.

They took refuge in the house of other relatives and today they returned to review the damage caused by the storm.

“My house… hey, he took it, he took it, here he had a little house where I kept my tool, everything was taken, everything left. We are no longer going to do anything, as soon as it started to rain, as soon as it started to rain, there is still the month of June, July, August, ”lamented one affected.

This day family and friends said goodbye in the municipal pantheon of Totolapan,

Eduardo, 50, the first victim of the rainy season, who died after being buried inside his home by a landslide caused by the strong storm.

At dawn this Wednesday, it rained again and the passage on the Oaxaca-Tehuantepec highway was interrupted again.

However, in less than 10 hours, the provisional crossing was rehabilitated, to maintain land communication between the state capital and the Isthmus region.

“And of course there was a little problem of vehicular traffic, but fortunately there is again the passage to the Isthmus area, or from the Isthmus to the city of Oaxaca, the blockade there was momentary, again a large amount of land that fell again, there were significant runoffs in that section, ”added Cutberto Ruiz Jarquín, CEPCO Meteorologist.

Civil Protection reported that the rains also affected some 50 homes in the Papaloapan Basin region.

On the coast of Oaxaca, the alert is maintained for a phenomenon of the deep sea, which causes swells and drag currents in different points of the Oaxacan coast, among them, Puerto Escondido.

One of the points where the phenomenon of the sea in the background is most strongly observed is the Zicatela beach.

“We are doing on the route we are patrolling this entire area, and there are the red flags since the waves are very big right now, the wave will approximately be between four to five meters high”, Everardo Martínez, Zicatela beach lifeguard.

On this beach there are waves up to five meters high and only professional surfers are allowed to enter.

Even tourism service providers have reduced their hours of operation, because, in the afternoons, the force of the swell is greater.

“The first thing we do is that the client arrives, tell him that he can only be there until four in the afternoon, from four o’clock onwards he can no longer be there, because he lifted the tables, chairs, umbrellas, because of the sea in the background , that something could happen, an accident and that ”, Juan Rojas, waiter from Bahía Principal.

According to the State Coordination for Civil Protection, this phenomenon will affect the coasts of Oaxaca until May 22.

And although some beaches do not present as much swell, the return currents can pose a risk to the population.

“Now, in the sea it is calm, but on the shores if you have to be a little cautious because the undertow is a little, the current as it is called,” concluded Marcos Lander, provider of nautical services.

The alert for the deep sea is maintained along more than 500 kilometers of coastline, from San Mateo del Mar, to Pinotepa Nacional.
