Most of the firefly sighting centers in Nanacamilpa, Tlaxcala are getting ready to reactivate the 2021 season, with just 30 percent of influx, prior reservation and sanitary measures.

26 of the 30 sighting centers will offer the show from June 18 to August 15, a period in which the arrival of some 34,000 national and foreign tourists is estimated, detailed representatives of the tourism sector when presenting the program at a press conference.

An economic spill of 15 million pesos is expected due to the resumption of activities, after the state is already in an epidemic green traffic light.

The president of the Association of Firefly Sanctuaries, Miguel Díaz Castro, explained that they made a commitment with the state government to open the centers this year in strict compliance with the biosecurity measures established by the World Health Organization.

He affirmed that the personnel of the centers received training from the State Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risks of Tlaxcala, the State Coordination for Civil Protection, and the State Tourism Secretariat.

He recalled that in 2020 the sighting in the forests of Tlaxcala was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic so that the tourism service providers in the Nanacamilpa area did not have an economic benefit, however, this year they expect to generate about 800 direct jobs and 400 indirect jobs.

He even foresees an increase in the cost of access to the sighting centers, which could range from 300 to 400 pesos, depending on the place.

Castro Díaz assured that they will only receive groups of tourists with prior reservation, in addition to only allowing 30 percent of capacity, taking into consideration the size of each of the centers and their infrastructure.

Among the protocols are:

  • • Work with the model of social bubbles of 8 to 10 people to avoid mixing small groups
  • • Mark the established distance of one and a half meters between each individual avoiding handshake and kiss
  • • Sanitation of equipment and buildings
  • • Use of face masks throughout the stay
  • • Application of antibacterial gel
  • • Initial verification of temperature and use of oximeter
  • • Access surveillance committees to maintain the allowed capacity
