The population perceives better conditions for tourism in the country
The perception of safety in Mexican tourist destinations improved in the first quarter of 2021, according to Inegi figures.
The most prominent case is that of Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, in the first quarter of 2021, the destination reported that 26.2 percent of its population perceived insecurity, while in the same period last year the percentage reached 39.7 percent. percent, according to the National Urban Public Safety Survey of the autonomous institute.
Another outstanding case is that of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, since between January and March of this year the image of insecurity was located at 60.1 percent of the population, while a year before it was located at 79.5 percent.
Mazatlán, Sinaloa, also reported a decrease, going from 57.6 to 45.1 percent.
Even Acapulco, in Guerrero, reported a drop from 81.5 to 79 percent in the feeling of insecurity.
In the case of Cancun, there is an annual increase of 0.5 percentage points, but with respect to December, an improvement of 2 percent is observed, reaching 86.1 percentage points.
Puerto Vallarta is the only destination that has not reported annual improvements, even with respect to the previous quarter, although the insecurity rating within the destination’s population was 35.5 percent, in the first quarter of 2021.
Alejandro Ramírez, president of the Mexican Council of the Meetings Industry ( Comir ), said that this improvement can be used for good in promoting Mexico and its beaches nationally and internationally to boost the activity of leisure travel and meetings or congresses.
“However, there is much to do in security, as the United States recently updated its alerts with Mexico and other countries. It must also be recognized that in the case of Cancun, although there is an improvement, the situation is not urgent.
“Their perception improved, but it is at very high levels, 86.1 percent, something must be done because it is necessary for the reactivation of many jobs,” said Ramírez.
