A regular air cargo route was launched on Saturday to link the city of Wuhan, capital of the central Chinese province of Hubei, with Mexico City.

The route will have two frequencies a week and will be operated by Aeroméxico, one of the largest airlines in Latin America, according to sources from Wuhan Tianhe International Airport.

The route is expected to allow the transportation of some 3,500 tons of cargo per year.

The regular air cargo route is the first of its kind between the Chinese mainland and Mexico. According to the airport, the service will greatly improve the efficiency of logistics between China and Latin America.

Mexico ranked as China’s second-largest trading partner in Latin America during 2020, reaching a volume of 60.85 billion dollars during the period, according to data from Chinese customs.

The main products exported to Mexico from China include liquid crystal displays, telephones, computers, and computer parts, while imports include integrated circuits and copper minerals.

The growth of e-commerce, the transport of medical supplies and high-tech products from this city to the rest of the world, has been exponential during the last year, even reaching an increase of more than 500% percent.

In addition, due to its infrastructure, the Wuhan airport stood out in the ranking of passenger transport in China for being in the first position among the 22 most relevant in that country.

The statement recalled that Aeroméxico Cargo has completed more than 235 exclusive cargo flights from China to Mexico and 16 other countries, since the beginning of the pandemic, transporting more than four thousand tons of essential medical supplies and other products.

All these operations exceeded more than eight thousand flight hours and six million kilometers traveled, which is equivalent to more than 170 times around the world.

“We are very grateful to the governments of Mexico and the People’s Republic of China, to our clients, business partners, and airport authorities for the trust they have placed in the talent of the Mexican flag airline.

Wuhan represents an extraordinary opportunity for the transfer of cargo between the two countries, with which we will offer our clients more and better options for the efficient and safe transport of their merchandise ”, stated the Senior Vice President of Aeroméxico Cargo, Alejandro Méndez.

In turn, the Ambassador of Mexico in China, José Luis Bernal pointed out: “It is an honor for me to be part of this inaugural cargo flight between Mexico and Wuhan, which is a reflection of the effort and collaboration of Aeroméxico with both governments.

“I am confident that these operations will contribute to the development of new routes that promote trade between the two countries for the benefit of their economies,” he added.

Aeroméxico Cargo can operate in more than 40 airports in the Mexican Republic and in multiple international destinations in the US, Canada, Central and South America, Asia, and Europe. The most common cargo is perishable products, live animals, high-value goods, technology, drugs, and medical supplies, among others.
