Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced on Tuesday, April 27th, that he will receive his counterpart from Guatemala next week, amid increased dialogue with Washington and Central America to seek solutions to the wave of migrants seeking to reach the United States.
The president explained that the Guatemalan Alejandro Giammattei would arrive in Mexico on Monday, May 3rd, to hold meetings with local authorities on Tuesday, April 4th, without offering more details about the visit.
López Obrador confirmed that the same week he will hold a virtual meeting with the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, to whom the president Joe Biden has commissioned to lead his country’s efforts to address the immigration problem, although he did not specify what day.
He reiterated, speaking at his daily press conference, his request to Washington to finance a tree planting plan in Central America in exchange for the granting of work visas in the United States to farmers in the region, an initiative he presented at the Summit of Climate Leaders last week.
The program, which would be similar to one that Mexico is developing in the southeast of the country, aims to create 1.2 million jobs and plant an additional 3 billion trees through its expansion into Central America, according to the president.
Harris held a virtual meeting with Giammattei on Monday, April 26th, and reported that the United States will provide an additional $310 million USD in aid to Central America as part of an agreement for both countries to work together to control migration, which has reached record levels since president Joe Biden took office.
