SECRETARIAT OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL WELFARE AND OPD HEALTH SERVICES OF THE STATE OF COLIMA

This year there are 1 thousand 632 poisonings due to scorpion sting:

Each year there is an average of 10,500

The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare reports that in recent years, there has been an annual average of 10 thousand 500 cases of poisoning by a scorpion sting, and so far this 2021 (to April 4), there have been 1 1,632 poisonings of this type in the state.

Likewise, it is reported that in the last 3 years there have been no deaths from this cause, after a woman under 6 years of age died in 2018 due to complications derived from a lack of timely care.

The Vectors area of the dependency reports that in the event of a scorpion sting poisoning, one must immediately seek medical attention to receive adequate treatment and not wait for the situation to worsen by using home remedies.

In this sense, it is highlighted that in all health units of the first level of care, drug therapy or antialacran is available to be applied immediately, based on the patient’s condition, where the doctor determines the degree of intoxication and the right doses to counteract it.

In the coastal municipalities of Armería, Tecomán and Manzanillo, as well as in Coquimatlán, the highest number of these intoxications occurs, due to the ambient temperature in those places and to which the insect adapts.

To prevent a scorpion sting, you should shake your shoes when you put them on and the cloth or towel when drying or cleaning, as well as doing basic sanitation at home, avoiding debris or bricks, to prevent these arachnids from nesting there.

Likewise, you must constantly shake your clothes and curtains and avoid walking barefoot at night, because the scorpion has nocturnal habits because it is when it goes out to look for food.
