International tourism in Mexico still struggling to recover

International arrivals to Mexico were affected by Covid-19 as of March 2020 due to border and airport closures. According to INEGI, in February of last year there were 3 million 800 thousand travelers that contrast with the million 587 thousand of the same month in 2021, 41% less; An income of 2.4 billion dollars in foreign currency was also reported during February of last year and this time it was 799 million dollars, that is, 66% less

These figures are alarming because recovery was expected in the tourism sector and there were signs to think that there would be. In April and May 2020, there was a gradual increase that peaked in December with 2.6 million international tourists and a spill in foreign currency of 1.3 billion dollars. However, the number plummeted in January and even more so in February.

On the other hand, the spending of international tourists in February 2021 fell from 289 dollars to 235, which represents 18.7% less than in February 2020. Interestingly, the spending of tourists who entered Mexico by air was 1,073 dollars, showing an increase of 0.5% compared to the same month last year.

The cruise sector remains completely paralyzed and it is expected that there will be a true reactivation with the application of vaccines and with a promotion on it to give international certainty, otherwise, Mexico will not be an international destination that provides security.
