“The Tehuantepec Isthmus Railroad is a project with an international impact on various issues, among which is the interconnection with strategic points in the south of the country, one of them is with our sister country of Guatemala.

“The connection project between the Guatemalan railroad and the Tehuantepec Isthmus Railroad will be carried out through the Rodolfo Robles border bridge that connects the cities of Tecún Umán, Guatemala and will be strategic for the southern border program promoted by the Government de México ”, said the spokesperson for the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Corridor, in a response to Forbes México.

Last January, the director general of the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (Inguat) affirmed that the governments of his country and Mexico were planning to sign an agreement so that the railways could enter from Mexico to Guatemala.

Since last October, the Guatemalan government announced that it was seeking a budget allocation for the strengthening of the bases of the bridge, active since 1976, and the change of the rails for the passage of the railroad, through which about 9 million tons of merchandise are moved annually. . These works began in the last month of 2020.

The connection point in Mexico will be Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas, separated from north to south by the Suchiate River from the Guatemalan town and will connect with the Isthmus train with the Ixtepec, Oaxaca to Tapachula, Chiapas railway.

The Program for the Development of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec contemplates not only the modernization of the Isthmus railway, but also includes the modernization of the two ports and highways in the area, as well as the natural gas infrastructure.

It also covers the maintenance and rehabilitation of the Salina Cruz and Minatitlán refineries; development of wind power plants, and the installation of underground fiber optics to provide internet service to the area.

On Friday, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, explained that the work of the Isthmus Railway, as well as the extension from Ixtepec to Tapachula would be in charge of the Secretary of the Navy, as well as the state governments of Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas and Tabasco.

The works of the Interoceanic Corridor registered progress of 32% as of March 1, according to the CIIT, which will also connect with the Mayan Train at the connection point of Palenque, Chiapas.

The contract for the operation of this bridge was delivered via concession in 2003 and is valid for 20 years, which expires on March 18, 2023.

“Operate, maintain, conserve and exploit the 0.414 km long Dr. Rodolfo Robles International Bridge, in the state of Chiapas.
