A few days before the Easter holidays start, Expedia.mx revealed that along with beach destinations, Mexico’s small towns are gaining a place in travel preferences for this season.

According to the searches carried out in the online travel agency, due to the pandemic, since Easter 2020 the preferences are mostly national with 86 percent, against the 73 percent that represented a year before.

For this year, the proportion is expected to remain, due to the importance of traveling around the country. Short distances have rebounded in preferences, in addition to the fact that the advance to reserve is still very short.

Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cancun are the destinations preferred by Mexicans, according to the Expedia.mx report, where plans and reservations are already registered at some resorts.

However, the popularity of towns and small towns is growing in the interest of travelers for this holiday season. According to the OTA, this is due to waiting until the last minute to make the reservation, whereas for a resort it is done earlier.

Expedia.mx reiterated to travelers the importance of making reservations in advance, considering that tourism companies have implemented flexibility policies for last-minute changes and cancellations.

According to the company, the states with the most attractive towns and small cities for Easter (Semana Santa) holidays are Veracruz with Coatepec, Coscomatepec, Orizaba, Papantla and XicoQuerétaro with Bernal, Cadereyta de Montes, Jalpan de Serra, Tequisquiapan; and Coahuila with Cuatro Cienegas, Arteaga, Parras de la Fuente and Viesca.

There are also Morelos with Tepoztlán, Tequesquitengo, Tlayacapan; State of Mexico El Oro, Ixtapan de la Sal, Malinalco, Tepotzotlán, Valle de Bravo and Villa del Carbón; Chiapas with Comitán, Palenque and San Cristóbal de las Casas; Oaxaca with Calpulalpan, Huautla, Mazunte, Mitla, Puerto Escondido and Guanajuato with San Miguel de Allende.

Beaches and Magical Towns, in the sights of “new normal” tourists

And what do you prefer: beach or magical town? According to an online travel agency, during the last five weeks, there has been a continuous growth in searches with a focus on beach destinations and magical towns (Pueblo Magicos). Which reaffirms a trend of the new normal, the preference for visiting places in the air and being in contact with nature.

In an interview with Viajero, Alejandro Calligaris, Country Manager of Despegar in Mexico, told us that “in recent weeks we have seen a 30% growth in the search for national destinations, which tells us about the interest in traveling, as it approaches the next Easter holiday period ”.

According to him, this behavior reflects the efforts made by the tourism industry to adapt to the new normal and provide confidence to travelers through flexible reservations to be able to make changes in travel dates, as well as health protocols with those that have national hotels that guarantee all the measures to have a safe trip.

Interest in beach destinations for a future reported trip is focusing mainly on: Cancun, Riviera Maya, Merida, Playa del Carmen, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and San José del Cabo; in addition to the magical towns, such as Tulum and Bacalar.

Travel Sale

Given the importance of the reactivation of the tourism sector in Mexico, Despegar carried out a Travel Sale from March 8 to March 15. An event of exclusive promotions and discounts, where Mexicans can book their next trip with flexible policies for this year and even for early 2022.

“Mexican travelers will be able to find exclusive promotions with discounts of up to 60% on domestic trips, offers with the country’s main banks that include options for an additional 15% discount with certain means of payment, and the possibility of booking up to 20 months without interest, in such a way that Mexicans have a wide variety of accessible options to book their next trip ”, shared Alejandro for El Sol de México.
