Mazatlán, Sinaloa.- There is no doubt that the limitations are put by the same people, an example of this is Gabriel Cortés Gutiérrez, who “turned” his mouth into limbs to paint figures and shapes in oil that become true works of art .
Having a congenital disease called Arthrogryposis (curved joints and limited movements), he cannot draw with his hands, but that did not stop him from taking a brush with his mouth to scribble, and with the passage of time he learned the technique very well.

There he discovered that he had the ability to paint, it was 15 years ago that he began with his first strokes at home, and for two years he has studied painting at the Municipal Arts Center of Mazatlán, but as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, he takes classes Online and twice a week he is visited by professor Miguel Flores, to give him classes and follow his development.
The 45-year-old Mazatleco is an example of a positive attitude towards life and personal improvement. Today he is part of the World Association of Painters with the Mouth and Foot, based in Europe.
He comments that painting with his birth disability has been difficult, but not impossible. More in finishing, in everything there is a process, it is necessary to surrender to work. His works have a double value: the artistic and the human.
“There are paintings in which I take up to two months, especially when they are very detailed, I dedicate two hours a day to painting and that is enough for me not to get bored, in two years I have painted 20 paintings”.
Before being a painter, he worked in a cyber shop, where he met Beatriz Ramírez, with whom he has been happily married for 11 years, also sold flowers on the Malecón in Mazatlán and worked at a hamburger stand.
“There are very few job opportunities for people with disabilities, at that time I did not know that I could paint and it has been a great help to me, I no longer need a job, from here he helps me to live and earn some money.”
The artist who lives on Simón Bolívar Street, in downtown Mazatlán, wants to win people over and reach their hearts with his work.
Images of the representative areas of Mazatlán, birds, fruits, flowers, animals among others, are the motifs chosen by the painter who has overcome adversity.
“I enjoy painting, when I paint I focus on what I am doing and I plan to continue studying to improve my technique and make bigger pictures and reach the hearts of people, who like what I do, who know me.
The paintings are sold through the Association, where there are around 800 painters and through American tourists.
I send my paintings, they give me a scholarship every month and I mostly sell them to tourists, mainly Americans, they recommend me to their friends.
