The number of victims of kidnapping in Mexico decreased by 10.5% per month in February, when 110 cases were registered compared to 123 in January 2021, the NGO Alto al Secuestro reported on Monday.

According to figures released by this organization, the number of detainees related to the crime of kidnapping in Mexico increased by 2% to a total of 100 compared to the 98 alleged perpetrators apprehended in January.

The states with the highest incidence of this crime in February 2021 were the State of Mexico with 18, Veracruz, with 17 and Sonora with 7.

On the other hand, the kidnapping rate per 100,000 inhabitants reflects that the states with the highest incidence are Baja California Sur, Sonora, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Tabasco, and Yucatán, in that order.

With more favorable data, the states that did not report kidnappings in the first month of the year were Chiapas, Coahuila, Durango, Guerrero, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tabasco and Yucatán.

According to the NGO, of the 86 kidnappings that were registered in February 2021, the authorities only counted 56.

Regarding accumulated kidnappings, the organization counted 3,388 cases between December 1, 2018, and February 28, 2021, with Veracruz being the state with the highest number (709), followed by the State of Mexico (578) and the City of Mexico (298).

It also reported that only 4.5% of the total victims were treated by federal authorities.

According to official figures, there have been significant casualties in high-impact crimes such as kidnapping so far during the current government’s administration, which has decreased by 37.6%.
