Last year’s rainfall by “Cristóbal”, “Gamma” and “Delta” reinforced the underground liquid levels of the entity, which is 3.40 meters above the average level.

MÉRIDA, Yucatán.- The volume of rainfall that fell last year as a result of the passage of the meteorological phenomena “Cristóbal”, “Gamma” and “Delta”, was not entirely negative, since it caused an increase in the level of the aquifer of Yucatán, said the meteorologist from the Autonomous University of Yucatán (Uady), Juan Vázquez Montalvo.

The specialist specified that compared to other entities, especially in the center and north of the country, Yucatán now has enough supply to provide water for the next 50 years.

He stressed that with the effects of climate change, it is expected that cyclonic systems will be more recurrent and cause stronger droughts.

“What happens is that anticyclonic systems are more recurrent; These phenomena, in general, are air that descends and prevents clouds from forming and rains from occurring, which leads to drought; with climate change, there have been abnormalities in the presence of these systems and they generally appear for a longer period of time ”, he explained.

Rainfall level in Yucatán

Last year, he recalled, only in the southeast zone and the Yucatan Peninsula was a good rainy season recorded that ended several years of drought; however, in all other parts of the country, the drought continues for the fourth consecutive year and could worsen.

The specialist highlighted that in the State the 2019 drought ended with the arrival of the cyclones and hurricanes of 2020 and the rainy season.

“Apparently, that severe drought was broken… the supply of the dams in the center and north of the Republic is in danger of water shortages; while that happens there, here we are 3.40 meters above the average water level, we have as much as 50 years, practically ”, he estimated.

He recognized that the entity is a privileged place since the underground water supply is well above its level when at this time of year it should only be half a meter above it.

The other states of the Republic, he continued, are going through a severe drought, a situation that is different for the Southeast.
