The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US announce a new guide for people vaccinated against covid-19 that contemplates the relaxation of the use of mask

People fully vaccinated against covid-19 can gather in small groups with other vaccinated people without wearing a mask, but should continue to wear them outside the home, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced Monday.

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said during a briefing that the agency’s new guidance for fully vaccinated people stipulated that they can also visit unvaccinated and low-risk people from another household without a mask.

The CDC advised fully vaccinated people to take many precautions, such as avoiding large gatherings, wearing masks when visiting unvaccinated people from various households, or when with people who belong to risk groups.

It is important to realize … that still more than 90 percent of the population is not yet vaccinated, and it is our responsibility to ensure, in the context of 60 thousand new cases per day, that we protect those who remain unvaccinated and are vulnerable ”Walensky explained.

The public health guidelines address how vaccinated people can safely resume some activities and contacts with people outside their homes, while the coronavirus is still widely circulating.

The recommendations come when approximately 30 million people in the United States (9.2% of the population) have been fully inoculated with covid vaccines manufactured by Pfizer / BioNTech, Moderna Inc, and Johnson & Johnson, according to CDC data.

Almost 18% of the United States population (58.9 million adults) had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Data on whether vaccinated people can still transmit the virus to unprotected people are scarce.

Previously, the CDC recommended that people should wear face masks at all times when they cannot stay at least 1.83 meters away from others, or at all times indoors other than their own homes.

Last month, the CDC warned that people who had been vaccinated within three months could skip the standard 14-day quarantine after exposure to someone with COVID-19, as long as they remain asymptomatic.

Some cities and states have begun lifting pandemic restrictions in recent weeks, against the advice of public health experts, who say the measures should be maintained until many more people are vaccinated.

Experts also warned of the still high number of cases and the most contagious virus variants that are becoming prevalent in much of the country.

Have You Been Fully Vaccinated?

People are considered fully vaccinated:

  • 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, like the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or
  • 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, like Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine

If it has been less than 2 weeks since your shot, or if you still need to get your second dose, you are NOT fully protected. Keep taking all prevention steps until you are fully vaccinated.
