March 7th, Rains in 19 states and hailstorms in central Mexico: the effects of the Cold Front 40 and a low-pressure

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) warned that hail falls are forecast in Hidalgo, Puebla, Tlaxcala, State of Mexico, Mexico City and Morelos

This Sunday, March 7, will be a rainy day in much of Mexico.

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported that in the next few hours, various climatic phenomena will affect the country.

Although the Cold Front Number 40 will leave the Republic and will spread over the Caribbean Sea, the polar air mass that drives it will cross its path with a low-pressure channel. Both events will leave “cloudy and rainy conditions in the northeast, east and southeast of the national territory.”

At the same time, this low-pressure channel will interact with instability in the upper atmosphere, and will cause “storms with electrical discharges and possible hailstorms in the center of the country, including the Valley of Mexico.”

According to the SMN forecast, the heaviest rainfall is expected in northern Chiapas, where accumulations of up to 50 liters per square meter (l / m2) could be registered. In addition, showers of 5 to 25 l / m2 are expected in Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Campeche and Quintana Roo; with conditions for hail fall in Hidalgo, Puebla, Tlaxcala, State of Mexico, Mexico City and Morelos.

Finally, isolated rains of up to 5 l / m2 could also occur in Nuevo León, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Guerrero and Yucatán.

“Showers and heavy rains could be accompanied by electric shocks, strong winds and possible hailstorms,” ​​remarked the climate agency.

This Sunday, the lows will not be as cold as in recent weeks.

Temperatures below zero are only expected in the mountains of Chihuahua and Durango, from -5ºC to 0ºC . While in mountainous areas of Baja California, Sonora, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, northeast of Jalisco, Guanajuato, State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala and Puebla, the lowest records will go from 0 to 5ºC.

In all the mentioned entities frosts could be registered.

Strong winds

The polar air mass of the Cold Front Number 40 will cause an intense North event , with gusts that will be of the order of 70 to 90 km / h in the Isthmus and the Gulf of Tehuantepec, and from 50 to 60 km / h in the Sonda de Campeche and the coasts of Yucatán and Quintana Roo.

In addition, on the coast of Veracruz and in Tabasco, the gusts will oscillate between 30 and 50 km / h.

As for the northern part of the country, there the winds will also beat strongly. According to the forecast, in the Gulf and the Peninsula of Baja California, Coahuila, Durango, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes and San Luis Potosí, they will beat from 50 to 60 km / h.

Heat wave

While the frontal system 40 and the low pressure channel affect the north, center and east of the country, in the other half of the national territory, the heat wave that suffocated numerous entities in recent days, and which is generated by a high pressure system located in the middle levels of the atmosphere.

This will cause the highest temperatures to move between 40 and 45ºC in Michoacán and Guerrero ; and between 35 and 40ºC in Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Guanajuato , southwest of the State of Mexico, Morelos, the coast of Oaxaca and Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.

Climate in CDMX

In the capital of the country, the sky will dawn half cloudy, with a cold atmosphere and banks of fog in high areas of the region. In the afternoon cloud cover will increase and showers will be recorded that could be accompanied by electric shocks and hail. The gusts of wind during the storms will beat at 40 km / h, and the minimum temperature will go from 6 to 8ºC and from 24 to 26ºC.

As reported by the SGIRPC, in Mexico City  these climatic effects are expected on Sunday afternoon , between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

“After noon the atmosphere will be hot, at night and in the early morning it will be from cool to cold.  Clear to half cloudy sky, towards the evening the clouds will increase especially in the west and south. In these regions, rains are expected, areas of showers are not ruled out, ”the agency explained.

The minimum temperature will be recorded at 06:00 in the morning on Monday, March 8, and will be about 10ºC, while the maximum will be 27ºC and is expected at 15:00 in the afternoon of this Sunday, March 7, in the Cuauhtémoc Mayor’s Office.

In addition, the north wind will be of the order of 15 to 30 km / h, and will gain intensity during storms, beating at 45 km / h. Given the anticipated conditions, the agency issued  a series of recommendations to the population:

*  Sweep the roof of your house,  try to waterproof it.

*  Do not throw garbage on public roads , ravines or rivers, the water can drag it, cover sewers and cause flooding.

*  Sweep the drain closest to your home  and keep it free of garbage or objects that obstruct it.

* If you live in an area of ​​channels or ravines, determine in advance with neighbors and relatives the path to reach the area of ​​lower risk.

*  Check that your home has not been damaged,  especially the roofs, electrical and gas installations, drinking water supply systems.

* Pay special attention  not to step on downed power lines  and avoid muddy or runoff areas.

* In case of waterlogging or flooding,  use chlorine to disinfect your home, clean the corners and all surfaces well to avoid infections.

* If you require it, the government of Mexico City has   temporary shelters in your area.
