The White House said Monday that US President Joe Biden is not considering sharing Covid-19 vaccines with Mexico or other neighboring countries at this time, after Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, He said he is waiting for a response from his counterpart at a meeting they will hold in the afternoon.
The goal of the Biden administration, the White House added, is to make sure all Americans are vaccinated.
Biden and López Obrador will have a virtual meeting this Monday and the Mexican is expected to ask him to consider sharing part of the US supply of vaccines against Covid-19, according to statements by US and Mexican officials.
“We want to receive a response to a request that we have already made and if President Biden considers it, he can give us an answer in the conversation,” AMLO said this Monday.
“It is an issue that matters a lot to us,” said the president, who did not explain in detail what Mexico’s request consisted of to the US president, with whom he will speak from 3:30 p.m.
Biden is open to discussing vaccines as part of an effort to cooperate in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic but will keep as his “number one priority” the need to vaccinate as many Americans as possible first, a White House official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
Psaki also specified that the borders with Mexico and Canada will be reopened until both countries control the pandemic.
“We cannot open the borders with Mexico and Canada if the two countries have not controlled the pandemic,” he said.
Mexico ranks fourth in the world in deaths associated with Covid-19 and, although it was the first country in Latin America to start vaccinating its population at the end of 2019, it has progressed slowly.
López Obrador has called on several occasions for an equitable distribution of vaccines against Covid-19 in the world and pressured the great powers to improve the access of the poorest nations to the doses.
“That is what Mexico is demanding at the UN, that there be equity, that there be no hoarding of vaccines,” AMLO reiterated this Monday.
