Matatán, Las Higueras and Aguacaliente de Gárate, today receive hundreds of parishioners who come to worship the Virgin Mary

Mazatlán, Sinaloa.- This February 2, the Catholic community in southern Sinaloa dresses up to celebrate the Virgin of Candelaria in the community of Matatán, Las Higueras, the municipality of Rosario, and in Concordia, in Aguacaliente de Garate.

The Virgen de la Candelaria or Our Lady of Candelaria is a Marian invocation, of the Catholic religion that has its origin in Tenerife. Its etymology derives from the candlestick or candle that refers to light: the holy light that guides to the right path and redemption and enlivens faith in God.

In Matatán since the early hours of this Tuesday, the pyrotechnics broke the silence of the dawn to warn the parishioners of the celebration of such an important date.

Immediately afterward, the mañanitas to the rhythm of the tambora rumbled through the skies singing the traditional mañanitas with songs like ‘Good morning Paloma Blanca, Amor de Madre, En tu día’, among others.

The dance of the Matachines performed their sounds to the rhythm of the strap huaraches, rattles, and their bows applauded by locals and foreigners who had already gathered at that time to worship the most pure Virgin Mary.

In the community of Higueras, something similar happened. There the dawn and the mañanitas were given at 05:00 hours with the song of a group of ladies who sang the traditional songs a cappella and their mañanitas to the patron saint of all the Higuereños.

In Aguacaliente de Gárate practically the parishioners did not sleep embellishing the parish, to receive thousands of faithful who will arrive throughout the day from different points of the entity.

According to the parishioners consulted, this occasion will be a little different due to the Covid-19 pandemic, however, they enlisted the prevention protocols to avoid any type of contagion.

Today is a holiday because La Candelaria is a Catholic celebration linked to Christmas and the birth of Christ, which in Mexico was combined with the agricultural festivals of the Mexica or Aztecs, which added an ingredient to the festival that in other parts of the world is not celebrated like that.
