Up in the Sierra Norte de Puebla, you’ll find the Magical town of Tlatlauquitepec

1471

The Sierra Norte de Puebla was home to groups of Olmec, Toltec, and Chichimec cultures, who left traces of their existence in this territory. It is right there where Tlatlauquitepec is located, whose name comes from Nahuatl and could mean “hill that burns” or “hill that colors.”

This town is surrounded by fir forests and its buildings have a lot of Franciscan influence. Among the places to visit is the Plaza de Armas, surrounded by portals, local trees and flowers; Also six kilometers from there, you will find the Tuxtla Waterfall, which has a waterfall of 100 meters; and the former Franciscan convent of Santa María Tlatlauquitepec, made in 1531 and in great condition. As for its gastronomy, the fruit wines that are made from pear, apple, capulín, walnut and various herbs stand out.

In Tlatlauquitepec there is much to do, from strolling through its quiet historic center and tasting its exquisite cuisine to doing extreme sports. There is a unique variety of climates that goes from the cold in the southern part of the municipality, through a more pleasant temperate climate in the municipal seat to the warm climate typical of the north of the municipality.

At the beginning of the 16th century, Tlatlauquitepec was inhabited by small Olmec groups, later Toltec groups settled, and during the expansion of the Aztec empire, the Chichimecas arrived, who went back to avoid being subjected to Mexico-Tenochtitlán. Three years after the fall of the Mexica Empire, around 1524, the dominion of Tlatlauquitepec was submitted to the encomienda regime, which today is Teziutlán, Tlatlauquitepec, and Hueytlalpan, the first encomendero was Jacinto Port.

SANCTUARY OF THE LORD OF HUAXTLA
In the Sanctuary, a beautiful sculpture of Jesus Crucified “Lord of Huaxtla” is venerated. Its construction dates back to 1701 when the priest Domingo Martin Fonseca ordered the construction of the first chapel, which was a wooden house with grass.

In 1822 brick was put in the priest and a bell was placed in 1826. For the year 1846, its niche was placed, stained glass, the pulpit, and side altars were placed. In 1914, the chapel was burned, so its construction of masonry and a tile roof began; same that is burned with the purpose of stealing the alms of the January festivities. Finally, it is determined to build a large church resembling a Latin cross with concrete vaults.

Today, it is the headquarters of the patronal feast of the Lord of Huaxtla, at Easter, it is the starting point of the Viacrusis and every Sunday masses are celebrated. The Sanctuary is open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

FORMER FRANCISCAN CONVENT OF SANTA MARÍA DE LA ASUNCIÓN
The former Franciscan convent was built in the year 1531 by the Franciscan order, the 4-sided tile roof is divided into three bodies, it contains 32 arches carved in pink quarry, extracted from the municipality of Chignautla.

In the main doors, you can see the Gothic style with Franciscan ornamentation and it has a typical Spanish patio with a fountain in the center of approximately 40 years; carved with the stone made by metates.

It is open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

PLAZA DE ARMAS
The Plaza de Armas of Tlatlauquitepec is surrounded by portals with a great variety of trees and flowers from the region, in addition to the magnificent view of Cerro Cabezón. Historically, the place has a very peculiar value, since this was where the first demonstration before the cadastre law took place on September 19, 1938, being Tlatlauquitepec the only municipality to do so.

Since pre-Hispanic times, the traditional tianguis has been held in the place, with the sale of products made in the region. .

MUNICIPAL PALACE
The Municipal Palace of Tlatlauquitepec was built in the 1800s, being the property of Mr. Don Ambrosio Luna. In 1872, the first hospital founded by Cura Lauro María de Bocarando was established in the construction. Finally, in 1890 it became the current municipal palace.

In the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, built-in 1922 by the parish priest Don Alberto Mendoza y Bedolla, there are 8 murals that according to an annotation at the bottom of one of them, were made by Luis Tora of the municipality of Zacapoaxtla, being copies of the original murals of W. Hole: “fall on the road to Calvary”, “prayer in the garden”, “the last supper”, “the transfiguration”, “the sacred heart of Jesus”, ” the resurrection “,” Jesus transferred to the tomb “and” the crucifixion “.

In 1955, the temple burned down as the roof was made of wood with tiles, so it was decided to rebuild it in a vault and with a dome. The main altar is made up of a quadrangular pachina on which a sculpture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus rests, with a great glow behind it. The entire church was decorated with gold foil and at the base of the dome, you can see oil images of Popes Pius IX, Pius X, Pius XII and Leo XIII; in addition to eight medallions with the face of Jesus and four related to the Eucharist. In the enclosure masses and ecclesiastical services are offered for funerals, communions, weddings, confirmations and the religious festival of the Church is celebrated every year in the month of July. The church is open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
