The natives of Haiti are in the city waiting to be able to process their legal stay in the country, others have chosen to stay in the town.
Haitians have positioned themselves in a large part of the Miguel Hidalgo central park and the surroundings of the Sebastián Escobar market, employing themselves in the sale of water and soft drinks, food, and even household utensils, as long as they subsist for their daily life in Tapachula.
The natives of Haiti are in the city waiting to be able to process their legal stay in the country, others have chosen to stay in the locality to survive with their families, but without any intention of returning to Haiti, due to the crisis political and social situation facing that country.
Andrés Ramírez Silva, COMAR general coordinator in Mexico, stated that in 2018 the number of refugee applications before this instance was only 76 people, however, by 2019 the number of people from the island increased dramatically, with a figure of more than 5,000 requests.
Faced with this situation, the Mexican Commission for Aid to Refugees has warned about the high number of refugee requests made by Haitians in Mexico and, mainly, in Tapachula.
In the first half of the year, from January to June 2020, there were a total of 3,661 Haitian citizens who requested refugee status in Tapachula, who arrived in Mexico due to the turbulent situation in their country.
By the end of this year, the number has not increased but the number has been stranded in Tapachula, without being able to leave for other destinations in the country.
Last July, Diario del Sur warned about the very poor conditions in which these Haitians lived, but by the end of the year the situation has worsened even more, because the pandemic and xenophobia have become their worst enemies.
The crisis that is being experienced worldwide has left stranded not hundreds, but thousands of foreigners from this country, destroyed by a corrupt political system, according to Haitians themselves, and a wound that has not allowed them to heal since the earthquake in 2010.
