The causes of death and contagion have Mexicali, the state capital, at the top of the occupancy of beds for coronavirus patients.

Measures to contain the spread of covid-19 have been discussed in the Baja California government since last January. Although it borders the United States, and Mexicali borders California – the state with the highest incidence of the virus in that country – the Health authority refused to take measures such as geolocation and monitoring of cases, or the protection of medical personnel through well-established shifts. Nor were protocols unified to address the problem with the US authorities. Now the state ranks fifth nationally in deaths from the pandemic.

MEXICALI, BC.- The fifth state in the country with the most deaths from covid-19 in the previous two weeks was Baja California. That stamp was clear on Monday the 21st when 63 deaths were reported.

The causes of death and contagion have Mexicali, the state capital, at the top of bed occupancy for coronavirus patients: it is 100% in the General Hospital, and Tijuana reached 89.67%Ensenada, the third most populated city in the state, has 84.62% of those beds occupied. Meanwhile, the IMSS is at 80%.

The critical situation is due, among other things, to a late sectorization, inefficient communication, the delay in the declaration of the red traffic light … in short, in the absence of corrective measures, says nephrologist Édgar Castillo López, first director of the General Hospital of Mexicali at the start of the government of Jaime Bonilla Valdez.

This capital is bordered to the north by California – the United States entity most contaminated by covid-19 – and to the east by San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora, which in turn is in the vicinity of Arizona and specifically Yuma. That is why Mexicali is a constant point of transit for people who cross the border in both directions.

The president of the Board of Supervision of Yuma County, Arizona – where health policies are established for the application of the vaccine against covid-19 – Marco Antonio Reyes Méndez, says that there is a lack of control measures and approved protocols between both countries, which were able to avoid the high spread of the virus.

Every day 12,000 to 15,000 people cross the San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora, San Luis, Arizona gatehouse. “The borderline protection measures established by the United States are ridiculously inadequate; I don’t want to talk about those in Mexico, ”says Reyes Méndez.

But later in the interview, he adds: there is a “simple issue of voluntary regulation. These types of measures, for me, are the cause that we have so many situations (of contagion): you create a feeling that you are going to do something against the covid, an illusion of restrictions ”.
