The local newspaper El Independiente de Hidalgo, one of the companies of the Autonomous University of the State of Hidalgo, announced the suspension of its print and digital activities “due to force majeure”, without specifying more information about the reasons on its official website.

On Saturday, December 12th, the workers of the newspaper were officially notified about the closure of the tabloid, which is associated with the Autonomous University of the State of Hidalgo (UAEH). However, in previous days they worked regularly without any kind of announcement about the end of activities.

Some workers of the newspaper reported that since May their payments were delayed for several weeks after the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) froze the accounts of the UAEH and its companies for alleged money laundering.

On June 18, the FIU unblocked 46 of the 52 bank accounts of the university, but there are still six HSBC bank accounts associated with the rector of the institution, Adolfo Pontigo Loyola; the local reporesentative from the Morena political party, Humberto Veras Godoy, and the former rector and former president of the UAEH Board of Trustees, Gerardo Sosa Castelán, detained in the maximum security prison of the Altiplano, State of Mexico, for money laundering.

The UIF blocked the accounts of the local newspaper that is one of the university companies registered under the corporate name La Voz del Aire SA de CV and Uni Comercializadora SA de CV

On Friday, December 11th, the UAEH concluded its remote activities after the conclusion of the July-December 2020 semester, so they will return to online activities on January 4 for the January-June 2021 school semester.
