This meeting will be held, virtually, from December 10 to 12 and will offer talks, design workshops, trade courses, and films.

With guests from Angola, Japan, Italy, Mexico, Bolivia, Portugal, and Peru, among others, the festival will address design and construction from the need for conservation and as a response to the urgent challenge of a fairer and more sustainable development.

In total, 33 specialists in architecture and conservation will share knowledge and experiences on good practices, traditional trades, and research to promote more connected and contributory architectures.

From Oaxaca, Joao Boto, an architect of Portuguese origin and based in this city for several years, will participate; from Mexico Luis Fernando Guerrero Baca, architect, master in Restoration, Ph. D. in Conservation and Professor-Researcher at the UAM will also participate.

Among the master talks are “Architecture without architects”, which revisits the classic theme of Rudovski from the eyes of Pedro Guedes (Australia), Rodrigo Pérez (Chile) and Andrea Bocco (Italy), exploring design from trades and practices in traditional construction; “Earth, the architecture of the future”, in which Norma Barbacci (USA), Joao Boto Caeiro (Portugal) and Luis Guerrero (Mexico) will share their visions regarding the value and validity of earth-based architectures.

The Festival also includes the talk “Sismo + Resistencia!”, In which Mariano Cutipa, Aymara restorer, Magdalena Pereira, South Andean Art historian and the prominent engineer Julio Vargas, a world reference in the strengthening of earth constructions, will talk about the ancestral technologies and contemporary land construction.

The talk “New indigenous architecture”, with the Atacameño architect Robert Maizares, will be a reflection on the design from the ancestral indigenous knowledge to inhabit, accompanied by Phaxsi Mamani, Ever Mamani and Karla Catacora, young arquitect@s andin@s Chile and Peru.

On the other hand, the courses “Construction in quincha“, on the construction of wooden partitions and earth, and “Reinforcing an adobe wall”, with halyard and geogrid techniques, will bring the design of sustainable architecture closer to the trade and practical knowledge preserved by master craftsmen from Andean South America.

In the design workshops, the challenge of “Rural housing” stands out, in which cases of rural earthen houses will be presented to challenge the participants to propose design guides to face a critical issue at a global level, which it can contribute to a more comprehensive and responsible living.

In addition to the talks and workshops, the Sarañani Festival! will offer free documentaries “En el patio de mi casa“, on social architecture with traditional materials by Óscar Hagerman, and will close with “Asak”, a winning documentary at the 15th Arica Nativa Festival that portrays the wisdom of a pot-carving artisan.
