Its varied gastronomy has earned Yucatan several recognitions that have gone down in history: more than six tons of cochinita pibil, a bread of more than 3,000 meters long, and a ton of octopus, are the dishes that have led the state to be featured on the Guinness Book of World Records.

Octopus

In 2014, Fundación Produce Yucatán achieved the record for the largest portion of octopus, weighing 1,326.26 kg. This “pulpeada” was prepared by 100 chefs in a period of 10 hours, according to the official Guinness website.

For this monumental dish, two tons of Mayan octopus, 200 kilos of onions, 200 kilos of tomatoes, 20 kilos of xcatik chili, 40 kilos of black recado, and four kilos of octopus ink were cooked for this monumental dish. 67 liters of white wine, 40 liters of sour orange juice, 80 liters of olive oil, and 1,600 liters of purified water were included.

The record was achieved thanks to the State Committee of the Yucatán Octopus Product System and the Produce Yucatán Foundation, during the Yucatán Expocampo.

Cochinita pibil

In March 2016, Yucatán achieved a new record with the largest portion of cochinita pibil, which weighed 6,626.15 kg. The traditional dish was prepared in 47 ovens and served in a 50-meter long container, accompanied by handmade tortillas, purple onion and habanero pepper.

250 student volunteers from the Universidad Tecnológica del Poniente helped prepare, cook, and serve the more than 3,000 attendees at the Expocampo.

The record was achieved thanks to the Fundación Produce Yucatán, AC in Mérida, which exceeded the figure imposed by a group in the Philippines in 2015, which achieved 4,045 kilos of cochinita pibil; as well as his own record, set in 2010, with 3,094.2 kilograms of the same dish.

Rosca de reyes

In Tizimín, the record for the longest Rosca de Reyes in the world was achieved, assembled with the help of 635 volunteers and prepared by La Mejor, La Reforma, La Amistad and El Ángel de Oro bakeries.

This is the state’s most recent record, achieved on January 6, 2020. For this Rosca, 7,370 pieces of bread were baked, reaching a length of 3 kilometers (almost 2 miles); thus surpassing the record set by the Vizcaya De Las Américas University, in Saltillo, Coahuila, with 2,065.43 meters of bread.

Other records

Among other records set in Yucatan, stands out the largest ball court in ancient Mesoamerica, located in the archaeological zone of Chichén Itzá, with a 166 x 68 meter court and 12 meter high walls, on which carved rings rest of entwined serpents.

The Guinness Book of World Records

The Guinness Book of World Records seeks to “make the amazing official”, these distinctions celebrate superlative achievements that are considered the best in the world. These records “entertain, inform, and inspire people through our original perspective of the world.”

Contrary to popular belief, those who obtain a record do not receive cash compensation. Whoever wants to break a record gets certified and is included in the Guinness Book of World Records, which goes all the way back to 1950 documenting all kinds of world records.
