Mexican cinematographer, Academy Award-winning Alejandro González Iñárritu heads the list of special guests in an edition that projects a large part of his films in digital format.

Morelia, Michoacán .- With the remastered screening of Amores Perros, this Wednesday starts the 18th edition of the Morelia International Film Festival (FICM), which for the first time in its history will have a hybrid version and most of its films will be seen on digital platforms.

Alejandro González Iñárritu is by far the most visible figure in this chapter, as he arrives in the city-backed by awards such as the Oscars for two different films (Birdman and The Revenant), being president of the Jury in Cannes and of course being a watershed with his debut feature produced in 2000, which raised Gael García Bernal as an actor.

On this occasion, a large number of films will be viewed on the Cinépolis Click, Filmin Latino, and Canal 22 platforms for free, while the competing feature films will be screened at the Cinépolis Centro and Américas complexes, as well as a selection of international premieres. In all cases, the rooms will open at 50% of their capacity and will apply the sanitary measures required by municipal, state, and federal authorities.

In the section of feature films in competition, the works of Carlos Cuarón, scriptwriter of Y tu Mama Tambien, who arrives with his third film, Amalgama, starring Tony Dalton, Manolo Cardona, Miguel Rodarte, and Stephanie Cayo, stand out. Nicolás Pereda returns to Morelia with Fauna, while Julián Hernández, another old acquaintance of FICM, presents La Diosa del Asfalto. Among those titles, Sin Señas ESPECIALES, by Fernanda Valadez, stands out, where the delicate subject of enforced disappearances is touched upon.

Another guest character is Michel Franco, who comes to present his most recent film Nuevo Orden, winner of the Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and whose approach has generated discussions on social networks.

In the midst of a pandemic that has hit the whole world, the FCIM has received the moral support of several film figures, including Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro, who recognized the effort of the team led by Daniela Michel, whom they consider The fundamental pillar of this meeting was also founded by Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Batel and businessman Alejandro Ramírez.

Unlike other editions, today the city of Morelia does not radiate the festival that year after year surrounds this festival. The few face-to-face functions and the fear of coronavirus infections keep its Historic Center calm, without the usual crowds that surrounded the red carpet placed outside Cinépolis.
