Merida Yucatan (October 8, 2020) .- After more than two and a half months of suspending operations, American Airlines reactivated the direct flight Mérida-Miami.
Passengers were received with the traditional water arch at the airport of the Yucatecan capital in what was the first arrival since the last week of July when the company stopped traveling to the state as a preventive measure against the health contingency caused by COVID- 19.
In the formal ceremony, the Secretary of Tourism Development, Michelle Fridman Hirsch, said that the reactivation of the route is an “extremely important” step in the process of tourist recovery since the Miami International Airport represents a huge gateway to various international markets.
This first flight registered a total of 63 tickets sold, while the return flight already has 100 percent occupancy. Boeing Embraer ERJ-75 aircraft with a maximum capacity of 76 seats are used for this route.
Upon arrival, in the migration room, the newly arrived travelers went through a sanitary filter, where the corresponding health measures were verified: temperature measurement, application of antibacterial gel, and the mandatory use of face masks, as part of the biosafety protocol implemented by the Southeast Airport Group (ASUR).
From this day on, the Miami-Mérida-Miami route will have five weekly frequencies, from Thursday to Monday, which will make it possible to have up to 1,520 seats available during October.
It will be until next November 4 when this figure increases to one daily flight, as it operated regularly before the pandemic, which will increase the possibility of arrival of more than 2,280 visitors a month.
