OAXACA, Oax., The Oaxaca State Museum of Popular Art (MEAPO), dependent on the Secretariat of Cultures and Arts of Oaxaca (Seculta), opened its doors to the public on October 2, 2004, in the municipality of San Bartolo Coyotepec, with the aim of preserving and disseminating the cultural work of the artisans of the entity and this Friday it turns 16.

In a statement it was detailed that throughout this time, the MEAPO has held more than 200 exhibitions of folk art, is a space for the various artistic manifestations of Oaxaca and Mexico with more than 400 cultural activities and 300 workshops in different techniques. of these creations.

The history of MEAPO began in 1905, when Don Manuel Guzmán, originally from San Bartolo Coyotepec, donated the property to the community in order to house a cultural space, this land was used as a school until 1994. It was some young people from the community who devised to turn it into a community museum to disseminate the crafts of the locals.

Later, the director Charlemagne Pedro Martínez, managed the Oaxaca State Museum of Popular Art before the State Government and after it was approved in the town assembly, in 1996 this space was opened on a community basis.

This museum has been a site for the promotion of cultural and popular art from the eight regions of Oaxaca, an ideal place to learn about Oaxacan crafts and the work of the magical hands of each of the communities that give life and color to the entity.

The MEAPO has four rooms, one dedicated to the great heritage of San Bartolo Coyotepec: black clay pottery; another that exhibits the state prizes of Popular Art such as works in textiles, tin, wood, and clay, an exhibition hall and the last one for the sale of Oaxacan crafts.

In collaboration with the Friends of Oaxacan Folk Art Foundation, Friends of Oaxacan Folk Art, based in New York, five state contests have been held to support young artisans, of which five popular art catalogs have been distributed. in the United States, London, Mexico, and Oaxaca.

This space has carried out various collaborations, among which are with the Banamex Cultural Development and the Alfredo Harp Helú Foundation for the creation of the book of masters of Popular Art of Oaxaca in 2008, as well as the medal for the trajectory in Popular Art to recognize the outstanding artisans of the state.

Within the framework of its sixteenth anniversary, MEAPO will award the prizes for the artistic trajectory of popular art from Oaxaca in its third edition to the teachers, Crispina Navarro Gómez de Santo Tomás Jalieza, in the backstrap loom technique and Juan Manuel García Esperanza, from the city of Oaxaca de Juárez, in the silver filigree technique.

Similarly, as a tribute to the artisans of San Bartolo Coyotepec, medals for their career in black clay art will be awarded to the masters Edmundo Mateo and his wife, and Antonio Eleazar Pedro Carreño, as well as a posthumous recognition to Cecilia Glafira Martinez Barranco.
