80 year-old Oaxaca man finishes high school and now wants to go for his college diploma

Víctor Nicolás Brígido, 80 years old, originally from San Lucas Ojitlán, graduated from the open education system at the Colegio de Bachilleres del Estado de Oaxaca (Cobao), in the region of the Papalopan Basin.

For three years, every Thursday, Víctor traveled more than 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the Vista Hermosa community to San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec to receive advice at the Open Education Center, number 04, motivated by his desire to learn.

I like to study, I like to know things, I decided to learn so that the day I die, what I studied stays in my head, and that I am going to take away with me ”, Víctor stated.

The teachers and advisers of the Cobao highlighted the commitment and disposition in the classroom of the student Nicolás Brígido, in addition, that they recognized him for being an inspiration, for his strength and wisdom of life.

When I was a kid, I didn't go to school because I didn't understand Spanish, I spoke my mother tongue, Chinantec; so I learned little by little to speak Spanish, and now at 80 years old, I finally managed to finish "La Prepa" ”, declared the man.

The recently graduated from Cobao is a peasant, he starts his day at four in the morning, he grows corn and beans, in addition to raising pigs.

Víctor Nicolás hopes to continue with his academic training, and he is willing to get his college diploma through the open education system.

I hope I live long enough to get my college diploma and become a professional, although due to the coronavirus pandemic, it looks a little more difficult, but right now, I feel very happy with what I have achieved ”, Víctor concluded.
