Fox News is launching an international streaming service to reach expats from the United States, and it’s starting off Mexico next week.
The right-wing news channel is counting on pro-Trump presenters such as Sean Hannity to draw subscriptions from American expatriates in an exceptional U.S. election year.
The digital streaming service will launch in Mexico on Aug. 20, expanding to Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom on Sept. 17, Fox News Media said Tuesday. It will be viewed on smartphone apps and Apple TV, and later on Amazon Fire and Roku.
Fox News International will be available in 20 countries by the end of the year.
Its primary audience is the 9 million U.S. citizens living outside the country at a time of heightened interest in news from back home.
Along with live streams, the service will include an on-demand catalog of 20-plus shows including “Hannity” and “Tucker Carlson Tonight” and, among Fox Business channel programs, “Maria Bartiromo’s Wall Street.”
The service, at US$6.99 a month, will be available Aug. 20 on devices including smartphones and Apple TV, with Amazon Fire TV and Roku to follow.
Fox News has been a ratings powerhouse this summer to become the most-watched U.S. TV network between June and August, according to Nielsen Media Research. But overseas distribution has been weak or, in markets such as the U.K., non-existent.
“With the ongoing developments of Covid-19 in the U.S., the upcoming presidential election . . . this is the perfect time to bring a product like this to the international market,” said John Fiedler, Fox executive vice-president for digital product and technology.
The Fox brand of hyper-charged conservative news has no similar English-language rival in most of Europe, Asia and South America.
