In March and April, approximately 44 thousand formal jobs were lost
The health crisis by Coronavirus and compulsory social isolation could mean up to 155,000 formal jobs lost and Jalisco take one decade to recover. In the months of March and April alone, approximately 44 thousand jobs were lost, which represents 2.4 percent of the formal jobs registered with the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS).
In addition, there will be many businesses that will no longer be able to open their curtains for the attention of their customers. Christian Sánchez Jáuregui, Executive Secretary of the Institute for Research in Public Policy and Government , of the UdeG University Center for Economic and Administrative Sciences (CUCEA), warned that the authorities should not only focus on the jobs lost during the health crisis but also on people that are incorporated annually into the formal market .
Jalisco declared mandatory social isolation in March, according to UdeG researchers, only about 6,000 jobs were lost and in April the record was 38,000. These figures do not count the informal jobs that represent about 50 percent of the total workers in the entity and that have a decrease in their income of up to 70 percent. What is very serious, stressed Sánchez Jáuregui.
As for the generation of jobs , Jalisco last year added 51 thousand. This means that with the jobs lost during the pandemic and the new jobs that are required, the list of unemployed will be enlarged because the jobs will not be sufficient, especially the sectors most affected are services and tourism .
