The Riviera Maya will be the destination with the longest impact due to Covid-19; because most of its tourism is European, and the reactivation of leisure travel in Europe is expected to occur until 2021.

Darío Flota Ocampo, director of the Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo, explained that it was thought that the European market would reactivate sooner, however, the health crisis reports a slow improvement, and travelers have not yet planned to take such long flights to tourist destinations on the other side of the Atlantic.

That is why it is contemplated to start the promotion campaigns of the Mexican Caribbean, looking t reactivate activities on June 1st, if the Health authorities allow it.

According to the director of the CPTQ, tourism from Germany, Spain, and Italy travels mainly from July to September, and it will be another missed holiday season, where the Riviera Maya will be the most affected.

Since March, the decline in tourism due to the pandemic began in the Mexican Caribbean. Marketing Consultants calculated that 190 thousand 823 visitors did not reach the destination of the Riviera Maya. 534 thousand tourists were expected and only 343 thousand arrived, in addition to the fact that the occupation hardly reached 51%.

The Riviera Maya has 428 lodging centers with 48,200 rooms, of these at least 47,000 are closed due to the lockdown.

Flota Ocampo explained that there are four regions in which the 13 destinations of the Mexican Caribbean are promoted, and will start with two: Mexico and the United States; to boost the arrival from June 1, they will later focus on Europe and South America.
