“As of Wednesday Feb. 19th, the importation of devices known as electronic cigarettes, as well as the substances and mixtures they require are prohibited in Mexico”, the Ministry of Health reported.

The measure was established by presidential decree published on Feb. 19, in the Official Gazette of the Federation (Diario Oficial de la Federación: DOF).

In Mexico, the commerce of electronic cigarettes was already prohibited since May 2008, when the General Law for Tobacco Control was issued.

The World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that electronic cigarettes; Non-Nicotine Electronic Systems and Alternative Nicotine Consumption Systems may contain levels of toxic substances and carcinogenic compounds, sometimes higher than those of traditional cigarettes.
